Traveling Around the World: Stop #1: MEXICO

Hola amigos!!

The artroom spent the past week traveling to Mexico learning about the art and style of various cultures, specifically the Aztecs.

Pre-K and Kindergarten students learned about the Aztec Sun god Tonatiuh and created their very own Aztec suns which  focused on line and shape patterns. Students had a blast practicing expressions on their face and gave their sun an exciting expression!

4th and 5th grade students started working on their Amate Paper Paintings. This type of painting is known for the material it is painted on (from the Mexican fig tree!) Students learned about the culture of this dynamic work of art and envisioned students their age creating these very same works on art in Mexico to help provide for their family! Students started sketching their designs :) Next step, paint!

6th grade students are learning about the decorative art of Papel Picado, or punched/perforated paper. Students discussed art vs decoration and will create interesting designs made by cutting paper symmetrically.

7th and 8th grade students learned about the culture of Mexico and the holiday Dia De Los Muertos! or day of the dead, which occurs November 1st and 2nd in correlation with all saints and all souls day! Students will be making paper mache skulls, similar to the decorative sugar skulls this holiday is known for!
